Found about 10 miles from my home .
The man who found it said he was a child, playing with friends,
in an old barn, in the early 1960's when he found it.
It was probably lost by a German Prisoner of War,
working on one of the farms, in Southampton, NY.

This collection is locked up in several different locations.

The items are not in my home, nor set up for display.

Please, do not ask if you can come over to look at the display.

There is none.

Last winter, I went to the East Hampton Historical Society lecture on this invasion of U.S. soil (3 miles away the lecture location).

For some reason, the saboteurs brought pieces of Nazi uniforms with them (maybe to not get shot a spies).

I just noticed when editing this photo from National Archives, either someone made a mistake, or this is not a Kriegsmarine overseas cap (which from the U-boat would have been dark navy blue and no soutasche or angled line division reference above the cockade or little bullseye circle), but a Heer (Army) M38 with soutasche.

This cap was left on the beach, Amagansett, Long Island, N.Y., by a German saboteur, June 12, 1942, from the U-boat U202. Photo Newsday.

Flag found on
U-858
Sold

Kriegsmarine Ensign possibly taken off U-858 first U-boat to surrender at wars end. See the note below....
Kapitanleutnant of U-858 Thilo Bode, and crew, after surrender at Fort Miles Delaware ( Fort Miles website)
All flag photos are from Thomas T. Wittmann

If this is a flag from the U-boat 858,
it would be a spare flag.
It is probably too small for a flag displayed on the stern when coming into port. Those are around 90 inches long. It may be a conning tower flag or just a Kriegsmarine spare. It is more, torpedo boat size.
It's new condition is valid with the short period of time this U-boat was at sea.

U-858 transferring crew to whaleboat. Flag flown is either a shower curtain painted black as requested by U.S. forces during surrender or may be U.S. flag by this time. ( all u-boat photos are from Fort Miles website)

Sold

"FLAGS-007-25412– Small Kriegs Flag"

"This Kriegs Flag is a real beauty. It was purchased locally by me. It was taken off of a U-boat, which surrendered off of Delaware, and was brought up the river to Philadelphia, where it was later used for target practice. This flag is a cotton example, still having its original rich red, white, and black printed colors. The canton area depicts the black Iron Cross, and the center area depicts the black swastika, with lines running out from it. The hoist area is complete with its canvas covering, and has the two rope loops intact. One side of the canvas is marked, “Kr. Fl. 80X 1 through 5 (135)”. The other side has the name and location of the company who made this beautiful Kriegs flag, “Lorenz Summa Oberkutzau”. This flag is the perfect display size, measuring only 30 inches wide by 50 inches long. As I said above, the colors are fantastic on this piece, and it is completely flawless, having been perfectly stored since it was taken from the U-boat during the war. A choice opportunity here, to really get something good. Mint  "*

*A quote from Thomas T. Wittmann's website about the Kriegsmarine Flag, above,
one of probably several from the U-858

Navy Pilot Golan, in front of a Kingfisher, at the Naval torpedo Testing Base, Fort Pond Bay, Montauk 1945. Photo from his book. Note: This PBY seems to be the early, non-amphibious fixed wheel model. His job was personnel, and to track torpedos and warn fishing boats to move out of the way (and apparently they ignored him for the most part)
This is what lies under the trees and shrubs, camouflaging the 16 inch gun bunkers, built in 1943-1944, at Camp Hero, Montauk.

More on Montauk, Fire Control Buildings, Bunkers, U-boats and German Saboteurs at the bottom of this page....

M35 Kriegsmarine Double Decal Veteran pickup. National shield intact. Numbered "4397" and the shell size ET64. Very good condition, but chinstrap was cut. (Customer's helmet )
Kriegsmarine Eagle looks to be in very good condition. Click on photos for detailed enlargement!
Liner slightly dark from use, but in good conditon. Liner string missing. Apparently, part of the chinstrap is missing, due to it being cutoff of the dead German soldier/sailor, by the vet. Liner size 56.

1941 German tan canvass tropical sun helmet. Shields on wrong sides, but do not seem to have been removed or replaced. Vet helmet. Period mistake? Well marked!
Slight crumpled cork on top and rip in canvass in front right, from use and storage. Remember, these items were played with by kids, in the 1950's and 1960's, so some wear is probably not wartime use, but who knows!
As they came to me, as package. Good helmets for beginning collector!
German tropical green canvass sun helmet. Both from vet's son. No markings on green helmet. Slight dent on top rear, from storage, some wear around edge, otherwise good condition.

Nazi saboteur left this overseas cap ( BW picture, is it Kreigsmarine?) on the beach, Amagansett, N.Y.June 12, 1942 ( not far from my computer). (Photo Newsday) I do not know where or in what museum, these items are stored.
Amagansett, N.Y. Here and in Florida, the same night, were the only places Nazis invaders set foot in the U.S. in all of W W II ! These items, including explosives and detinators, disguised as pens and coal, were buried in the dunes, Amagansett. (Photo Newsday)

Fire Control towers disguised to look like cottages, Shadmoor, Montauk. (Click on all photos for enlargement)
Fire Control Tower, for 16 inch guns, Montauk.
Closest Tower to the Atlantic. Used by surfers, fishermen and teenagers (for partying) from the sixties to present day.
Front view of same tower. This area is now Shadmoor State Park. This past week, a Park employee told me they are trying to get the funds to make this area into a WWII memorial.
Fire Control Tower view of Atlantic Ocean.
Image: Foondoggy at www.altsurfing.org. I found this wonderful photo while surfing the net. Apparently a gentleman who bodyboarded, back in the sixties, took this photo of the tower above in 1969 ( I started surfing at Ditch Plains, in 1963 and never noticed these towers until the 1980's!). Notice the chimneys, still intact (they now lie in ruins next to the tower), and the scrub brush at a much lower height. The author states his father was briefly stationed as a lookout, at this tower in 1944. This is new info, for all the present info says it was only for fire control for the two sixteen inch gun bunkers (four guns). If anyone has more info or other photos, please send.
German M40. My first German helmet. Looks pretty good after surviving WW II and a bunch of kids playing "army" on Long Island in the 1960's.I have never seen a helmet this exact color. My closest guess is Luftwaffe. It is Heer green on the inside, steel blue repaint, outside, and all original I have owned it for 42 years.
Please send any info on military bases or other military history on Long Island. I need Camp Hero photos and The Navy Base at Lake Montauk (Fort Pond, torpedo testing range), Grumman Factories, Fort Tyler ( The Ruins, Gardiners Bay), Fort Ritchie, Fire Control Towers, Fishers Island, Plum Island gun emplacements, U-853 ( underwater photos needed of this last U-boat sunk in W W II, off Block Island ), Navy blimps, PBY'S, fighter plane crash in Wainscott, Nazi saboteur landings in Amagansett, other bunkers, etc.....

Heer M35 Double Decal, size 62 ( postwar repaint , insignia and too small split pins done in the 50's or 1960's), My second helmet, 1965 from the Robert Abels Collection. Field gray paint over original green, as seen on inside. Evidence of rust under paint in a couple of areas. Painted National shield peeling slightly.
Is this a 1960's repro or real? If it is not a 1960's West German repro, it is a very rare, unissued, mint SS Officer's Visor Cap. I aquired this hat the same time as the M16 above, 1965, from Robert Abels Arms and Armor, in NYC. ( all of my first helmets were aquired from this dealer). Not for sale until I can verify the cap's originality. Two "experts" have stated,"possibly is," and two have questioned it's validity. Go to page 4 for picks. Any ideas? It was purchased for about $30-$40, back in 1965.
"Almost mint," Austrian M16 transitional, my third helmet. Lesson in stupidity: do not ever take a 70 year old helmet, that you have not seen in thirty years, and try to stretch the chin strap over the visor for a stupid picture to show the chinstrap is intact, because it will no longer be intact or mint!!!!
U-202, June 12, 1942 delivered Nazi saboteurs to the beach at Amagansett, N.Y. Almost one year later, the u-boat sent a message that would seal it's fate! ( that beach is 2 miles from this computer) (click for details)
Captain Johnny Walker, RN, commanding the HMS Starling, and an escort convoy, sunk the U-202, June 02, 1943 (click)
RN HMS Starling
U-Boat territory! Many U-boats waited for ships, bound for Europe and elsewhere, to leave New York harbors. U-202 surfaced 400 yards off the beach, about 4 1/2 miles west (straight ahead) of this view ( there are no cliffs, down the beach, where the saboteurs landed). A year and a half later, four 16 inch gun emplacements were installed in two bunkers and two, six inch guns, in another, by the U.S. Army, to the right side of this view, camouflaged, behind the cliff, for coastal defence.( Camp Hero. For more pics, scroll down.) Click picture for larger view.

All items are original, to the best of my knowledge, unless stated otherwise, as in movie props, which are also original to that film production. All original war/military items, were purchased from vets, vets' families, or known dealers online. Some items, were purchased, in the 1960's, from the prestigious antique arms and armor dealer, Robert Abels, in New York City, and other antique dealers in the area.

If you see an item, and question it's originality, feel free to bring it to my attention, and I will investigate, further ( I do this with other websites, not to be smart, just to bring it to their attention. It's usually a genuine mistake, not a rip off!). (Some of the items, recently listed, were just taken out of storage. I have not examined these items in 30 years. I will be taking inventory this winter.)

If you see something of interest, or if you have items to trade or sell, please E-mail : warantiques@optonline.net

If you live on Eastern Long Island, New York USA, I may be available to take a look at your items in person, but digital photos are faster!
